Questions
1. Your cheek cell is an example of an animal cell. Compare this animal cell to the Elodea plant cell you studied. What differences were you able to observe, both in general (size, shape, etc.), and in terms of cell parts present?
The difference between the cheek cell and the elodea cell is that elodea cells are rectangular in shape and fit closely together while the cheek cells are ovular in shape and are at random places. The elodea cell is slightly bigger in size, being around 100 micrometers while the human cheek cell is around 70 micrometers smaller with an average size of around 30 micrometers.
2. What differences do you know about between plant and animal cells that were not apparent from observing the cells through the microscope?
Differences between a plant and animal cell that is not distinguishable under a microscope is that plant cells create food through photosynthesis while an animal cell does not. An animal cell also does not have a cell wall as well as cellulose that would help it absorb as much liquid as a plant cell. Plant cells have cell walls made of cellulose that allows it to absorb more liquid.
3. Choose 6 organisms from the same phyla and create a dichotomous key to classify them.
1. Do they have at least 10 legs?
a. Yes, Chilopoda.
b. No, go to 2.
2. Do they have wings?
a. Yes, go to 3.
b. No, go to 4.
3. Do the wings have more than 2 colors?
a. Yes, Lepidoptera.
b. No, Mantodea.
4. Do they have a skinny waist?
a. Yes, go to 5.
b. No, go to 6.
5. Is the antenna bigger than half their body length?
a. No, Larval Insect.
6. Does it have 8 legs?
a. Yes, Arachnida.
b. No, Immature Phasmida.
