Questions
- What
are protists? Are they unicellular or multi-cellular organisms? Are they
prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Protists are eukaryotes that are not members of the plant, animal, or fungi kingdoms and are mainly unicellular. - Can
they eat food and/or can they make their own food from the sun
(photosynthesize)? Explain.
Protists prey on bacteria.
- Why
are Protists said to be the most diverse of all eukaryotes?
Protists were the 1st to develop so they had more time to evolve and develop differences amongst each other. - What
process is thought to be involved in the genesis of eukaryotes from
prokaryotes?
Genetic and fossil evidence shows that eukaryotes evolved from prokaryotes. - Define
endosymbiosis. What does endosymbiosis
have to do with protists?
Endosymbiosis is a symbiotic relationship between eukaryotes and the prokaryotes in them. This theory helped with the diversity of protists.
- Why
do most biologists currently working on eukaryotic relationships consider
Kingdom Protista obsolete?
They believe that the diversed variety of organisms within kingdom Protista are more closely related to eukaryotes than protists.
