Questions
- What
were the green structures you saw in each Elodea cell? What is the
function of these structures? Would you
find these in animal cells? Why or why not?
The structures found in the elodea cells are chloroplasts that make them green and able to capture energy from light. - Compare
nonvascular, seedless vascular, seed plants (gymnosperms) and seed plants
(angiosperms).
Gymnosperms bear seeds on the scales of cones while angiosperms make seeds in flowers. The flowers have both male and female reproductive systems but cones only have female reproductive gametophytes. Wind also carries pollen from gymnosperms but both wind and animals carry pollen from flowers.
- Using
the kit in the classroom, identify leaves from angiosperms using the
dichotomous key.
1. American Sycamore
2. Eastern Cottonwood
3. Siberian Elm
4. Eastern Redbud
5. Osage Orange
6. Silver Maple Leaf
7. Scotch Pine
8. Ginko
9. Norway Maple Leaf
10. Honey Locust
11. Eastern Hemlock
12. Little Linden Leaf
13. Northern Red Oak
